Neutrogena Shine Control Makeup - New in Drugstores + Some Swatches!

I spotted a bunch of new products at my local CVS last night. Displays have been popping up in drugstores over the past month, but it's the first time I've seen the display for the new Neutrogena products. There were sample packets for the liquid makeup, so I thought it'd be the perfect swatching opportunity! haha.

I'm going to go over the line briefly - swatches and comparisons will be at the end of the post.

Neutrogena Shine Control Liquid Makeup SPF 20 ($12.99)

Neutrogena Shine Control Makeup helps provide 8 hour shine control in a lightweight, breathable formula. Shine Control Makeup blends perfectly for natural-looking coverage with a soft, matte finish. Broad-spectrum SPF 20 helps protect against sun damage.
  • 8 hour shine control
  • Lightweight, breathable formula
  • Won't over dry skin
  • Broad spectrum SPF 20
Available in eight (8) shades: Classic Ivory, Natural Ivory, Buff, Nude, Soft Beige, Natural Beige, Fresh Beige, Warm Beige.

Neutrogena Shine Control Powder ($11.99)

Neutrogena Shine Control Powder helps skin stay shine-free and fresh-looking all day. The lightweight powder with patent-pending rice protein technology acts like a sponge to absorb excess oil and instantly eliminates shine for a fresh look that lasts for 8 hours. Layers invisibly over makeup with a matte finish.
  • Blends invisibly into skin for a flawless look that’s never overdone
  • Perfect for on-the-go touch ups
  • Won't over dry skin or clog pores

Neutrogena Shine Control Primer ($12.99)

Neutrogena Shine Control Primer helps makeup apply more smoothly and last longer, while optical modifiers help minimize the look of pores. Can be worn alone or under foundation. This lightweight, non-greasy formula with patent-pending rice protein technology acts like a sponge to absorb excess oil so skin stays shine-free and fresh looking all day.
  • 8 hour shine control with or without makeup
  • Extends the wear of makeup
  • Matte finish
  • Won't over dry skin or clog pores

*Prices may vary based on location.

The liquid makeup has same shades as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup, but Healthy Skin has 12 shades in total, and Neutrogena Shine Control Makeup has 8 shades in total. It's still very new though, so time will tell if additional shades will be added to the line in the near future when the product fully launches.

The sample provided #10 Classic Ivory, #30 Buff and #60 Natural Beige. I actually own Classic Ivory and Natural Beige in Healthy Skin, so I swatched them below to compare.

Swatches from left to right: Neutrogena Shine Control Classic Ivory, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Classic Ivory, Neutrogena Shine Control Buff, Neutrogena Shine Control Natural Beige, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Natural Beige, MAC Studio Fix Fluid NC15, MAC Studio Fix Fluid NC30.

It appears the colors seem to be almost exact matches as Healthy Skin, so whatever color you use in Healthy Skin should work in the Shine Control line. I notice that the Shine Control shades are a touch more yellow.

I did only grab one sample (I don't want to be greedy!) so I can't comment much on the foundation itself, as I really only had enough to swatch the colors.

This foundation is best suited for oily skin. It's silicone based, so for those who do well with silicone based foundations (For example: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hr Foundation, Physican's Fomula Youthful Wear Foundation, Mousse Foundations, etc.) may like this foundation.

NYX Sand Pink Lip Liner Pencil Review!

NYX Sand Pink Lip Liner Pencil

      NYX Sand Pink Lip Liner

NYX Sand Pink Lip Liner ($3.49) is cool medium pink with a matte finish.

NYX Slim Lip Pencils are available in a huge variety of shades (60 to be exact) so you'll be sure to find every color you're looking for. (Incredibly, Makeup By Celly has swatches of 1/3 of the shades!)

You can use these lip pencils to define the shade of your lips, or you can fill in all of your lips with the color and apply a similar shade of lipstick on top for mega-long lasting lip color. If you find a shade you really like, you can even wear them on their own, with a little bit of lip balm or gloss.

I've only tried a couple different shades in the past, and I've been really happy with these liners. They are pigmented, smooth and glide on easily without tugging or clumping.

The lasting power isn't bad, but I notice after a few hours I need touching up. I have only tried lighter shades though (which will typically fade faster), so I'm sure some of the darker and/or brighter shades would stick around longer.

NYX Sand Pink Lip Liner applied all over my lips

      The Round-Up

      Pros:
      • Great Color Selection - Sand Pink works well with a variety of pink lip colors
      • Pigmented
      • Glide on easily
      • Very affordable
      Cons:
      • Aren't as long lasting as some of the higher end brands (but bear in mind the price difference)
      Price: $3.49, ULTA.

      What's in my makeup bag?

I haven't done a "what's in my bag" in a while, so I thought I'd do a quick run though of all of the junk I currently have in my makeup bag. It's kind of a fun way to show you the products I'm enjoying right now!

The stuff I use changes all of the time, but the stuff I always keep in my bag are products that are easy to use (don't require much work to get it right) and never seem to fail me. In other words, my "go-to" products.

I have many go-to products (most are listed on my favorites tab) but I can't cram them all in one little makeup bag. ☺

For reference, I don't carry all of this with me in my handbag - I've included a list of what I do carry in my handbag at the bottom of the post - which is only a few things!

Continue reading to see all of the products in my bag...

Guerlain Parure Extreme Foundation - I've talked about this foundation several times on my blog, and it's still one of my top foundations. It's lightweight, creamy, provides excellent coverage and has such a flawless finish. It's crazy expensive, but I don't mind splurging on it.
Becca Compact Concealer - This is a a really fantastic cream concealer duo, that provides medium and full coverage. I love that it never looks cakey and doesn't budge throughout the day. Although I do love it, I think it's way expensive for the amount of product you get, so I'll be sticking with MAC Studio Finish Concealer in the future - they're incredibly similar!
MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation - This powder is a product that never leaves my bag. It's a product I've been using off and on for years. I don't normally use it in my morning routine (unless I want full coverage - I'll buff it over my foundation) but I always use it for touch-ups throughout the day.
MAC Crew Highlight Powder (used as a blush) - Gah, I love this product. For those that think this product is chalky, the trick is - instead of sweeping it on your cheeks, buff it. I noticed when sweeping it on the cheeks the color can look a bit light, but when I buff the color, it warms up to my skin tone and looks gorgeous. The results are night and day. See my review here.
The Balm Mary Lou-Manizer Highlighter - This is probably my second favorite highlighter next to Dior Amber Diamond. I don't have a review up for this product yet, but it's caused such a stir the past few months on beauty blogs, and I can see why. It's such a beautiful, golden champagne that I can imagine would flatter every skin tone.
MAC Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer - Lately I've been much more fond of sheerer bronzers and I've been only using this bronzer since I purchased it. (Prior I was using Becca Flamenco, which is also sheer.) I love the warm yellow-golden color, soft texture, blendability, sheer - but very buildable pigmentation and the soft, natural finish. (MAC if you're listening, make these a part of the permanent line!)
Real Techniques Stippling Brush - My favorite foundation brush for the past few months. I haven't used anything else.
Real Techniques Foundation Brush - I've been using this to apply my concealer, and it works great for that. It's a little small (for my face at least) to apply foundation.
Sigma F35 Tapered Highlighter Brush - I love this brush and I'm so happy I purchased it. I use it every day to apply my bronzer and/or contour, and many times, I use it to apply my blush as well. It's the perfect size and shape, and it's so soft. I think I might buy a couple extras to have in the future.
MAC 181SE Kabuki Brush - I always keep this brush in my bag for touch-ups. It's tiny, so it doesn't take up any space at all, and the bristles are so soft and dense. Just a little swirl in my Studio Fix Powder and buff it into any shiny areas, and I'm done!
Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base (sample jar) - This cream is so amazing, and I always use it under my eyes before I apply my concealer as a base. It hydrates my skin and makes it feel so soft. I try not to use it too much though, because I'm not sure if I can justify spending $52 on a full size jar. If you can get your hands on a sample, definitely do!
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel - I don't use this as a part of my skincare routine (it doesn't really do anything for me?) but I love the light, gel texture. I usually use it before I apply my foundation (as a base/primer) and I love that it absorbs quickly and doesn't make my foundation greasy or oily throughout the day.

Nars Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base - This is my favorite eye shadow primer. My eye shadow seems to cling to my skin better and my eye shadow won't budge all day! I definitely prefer this over Urban Decay Primer Potion, although Urban Decay has more product for less money.
Nars Kalahari Duo Eyeshadow - I use this duo frequently when I'm on the go. I usually brush the shade on the right all over my lids, and blend the shade on the left in my crease. The color on the right is really similar to MAC Satin Taupe.
NYX Black Single Eyeshadow - I always have this on hand to deepen my eyeshadow, or for something simple, I'll smudge a little on my top and bottom lashline, followed with a couple coats of mascara.
L'Oreal Iced Latte Infallible Eyeshadow - This frosty champagne-beige is an amazing highlight shade for the inner corners of the eyes and brow bone.
Lancome Brown Artliner - I don't use liquid eyeliner too much, but when I do, I've been reaching for this.
Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base - I refuse to wear any mascara without this! This base makes my puny lashes look.. well, not so puny.
Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara - I loathe the applicator (it's too large and bulky, doesn't reach my corner lashes, bristles are too short, etc.) but the actual formula is fantastic. This is the only mascara I can ever rely on not to smudge.
Anatasia Brow Gel - Brow gel is a must for my bushy brows, and I love this one by Anastasia. It gives a medium hold, and keeps my brows in place for most of the day.
Maybelline Master Shape Brow Pencil - The design of this product is garbage (It's a plastic pencil that you have to sharpen, and you will never achieve a pointed tip because the product is a tinted wax), but the product itself works really well. I will actually most likely re-purchase this because it's convenient to use and it does a great job filling in my brows without them looking too harsh. Plus, it holds up really well throughout the day.
MAC Spiked Brow Pencil - This is the brow pencil I use when I want really precise, razor-sharp, clean brows. You don't get much product for what you pay (with daily use I could be done with one in one month), but it really is an amazing brow pencil.
DUO Black Lash Adhesive - My favorite lash glue ever. I always keep it in my bag.
Essence of Beauty Eyeshadow Applicator (from the starter kit) - I usually keep this little applicator in my bag if I need to apply my eye shadow on the go (AKA in the car - passenger of course) or for touch-ups.
Revlon Tweezers - Next to Tweezerman, Revlon makes some pretty good tweezers. I always have one in my bag because you'll never know when you're going to spot a stray!

MAC Oak Lip Pencil - I love MAC lip pencils. Oak is one the shades I use often to wear with my nude-pink lipsticks. It's the perfect warm nude.
NYX Nude Pink Mega Shine Lipgloss - I'm loving this lipgloss at the moment - very similar to NYX Nude Peach Fuzz, but more pink (less peach) and a little more sheer. I can tell that it's one I'm going to continue re-purchasing.
NYX Nude Peach Fuzz Xtreme Lip Cream - This is my favorite lip product right now for a warm peachy-pink lip. You have to try these!
MAC Insanely It Sheen Supreme Lipstick - I've mentioned this lipstick several times on my blog. It's such a flattering, vibrant berry pink. It looks beautiful alone, but it also looks great toned down or mixed with a bubblegum pink lipgloss. I wear it all the time.
MAC Creme Cup Lipstick - Creme Cup is my favorite pink lipstick! It never leaves my bag.
Revlon Strawberry Shortcake Lip Butter - Similar to Creme Cup in color, but slightly cooler. If you're a lover of bubblegum pink lipsticks, you probably need this one. I love the texture and the shiny finish of Revlon Lip Butters.
Smith's Rosebud Lip Salve - I have chronic dry lips and this is the only lip balm on the market that heals my lips and keeps the peelies away! I have this with me at all times, otherwise I'll have to deal with peely lips all day.

From left to right: MAC Oak Lip Liner Pencil, MAC Insanely It Sheen Supreme, Revlon Strawberry Shortcake Lip Butter, MAC Creme Cup Lipstick, NYX Nude Pink Megashine Lipgloss, NYX Nude Peach Fuxx Xtreme Lip Cream, MAC Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer, MAC Crew Highlight Powder, The Balm Mary Lou-Manizer Highlighter, NARS Kalahari Duo, L'Oreal Iced Latte Infallible Eyeshadow, NYX Black Eyeshadow, Lancome Brown Artliner, MAC Spiked Eyebrow Pencil, Maybelline Master Shape Brow Pencil in Deep Brown.

      ( a closer look)

The stuff that usually travels with me in my handbag is stuff that I'll generally need for touch-ups. The only things I really need are:

      MAC Studio Fix Powder
      MAC 181SE Kabuki Brush
      MAC Oak Lip Liner Pencil
Lip Products (I like to have at least 2-3 lip products with me and lip balm)
Brow Pencil (in case of touch-ups)
DUO Lash Adhesive (if I'm wearing false lashes)
      Tweezers

I use to carry everything I put on my face that morning with me just "in case", but for the most part, I never used any of it, and it just weighed down my bag. Carrying a heavy bag never bothered me, but lately, I've been trying to pack as lightly as possible. I clean out my bag every week of unnecessary items (too much change, receipts, excess makeup, etc) Too much junk drives me nuts. haha!

How about you? What makeup do you always carry with you?

*My cosmetic bag is from Forever 21.

Step by Step Smokey Taupe Eyeshadow Tutorial!

      mac eyeshadow tutorial

      Smokey Taupe Eyeshadow Tutorial

One of my favorite eyeshadows is MAC Satin Taupe. It's a really pretty frosty taupe (gray brown) that looks great with a variety of looks. It looks amazing paired with brown and burgundy - One of my favorite ways of wearing it is by applying a dark brown base to my lids and layering Satin Taupe over top, to intensify and slightly deepen the color, then apply a soft golden brown through the crease, and a reddened brown through the outer-v. The burgundy mixed with the taupe almost gives off a slightly mauve/plum tone that really brings out the green in my eyes.

I'll be doing just that in this tutorial, but I'm making the look a bit more dramatic by adding black eyeshadow and liner.

To make this look more daytime appropriate: The black shadow, liner and faux lashes are what really intensify this look, so for something a little lighter and more wearable during the day, skip step 7, 9, 10 and 12. You really don't have to line your eyes at all (I wear this look often during the day without liner), but if you'd really like to, you can opt for a dark brown liner for the top lash line.

MAC Paint Pots Overall Review with Swatches and Photos! (pic heavy)

      mac paint pot reviews

      MAC Paint Pot Overview

MAC Paint Pots ($17.50) are MAC's take on Cream Eyeshadows. They are versatile products because there can be several uses for them. You can wear them alone on the lids, as a liner, as a primer or as a base color for powder eyeshadow/pigments.

A highly pigmented eye colour that goes on creamy but dries to an intense, vibrant finish. Long-wearing, colourfast. Creates seamless coverage without weight or caking. Blends smoothly over the lids. Cream-based, can be mixed with M·A·C shadows and liners.

MAC Paint Pots are available in nine shades: Bare Study, Soft Ocher, Painterly, Rubenesque, Indianwood, Groundwork, Constructivist, Quite Natural and Blackground. I own all of them, except Blackground and Soft Ocher. (None of which I have posted reviews for in the past, so I thought it'd be a good idea to gather them up and review them together.)

MAC releases limited edition shades every now and then in some of their collections, but the actual permanent collection is quite small and lacks much color. All of the colors are fairly neutral. MAC did have many more colors in the past, but almost all of them became discontinued and they never filled the void with replacement/additional shades.

Rubenesque - Golden peach with gold pearl (frost)
Rubenesque is very sheer, and has to be layered for opaque coverage. Because of it's sheerness, I never wear it alone. I usually wear it as a base for when I'm wearing warm-toned eyeshadows such as orange, peach, gold, copper, bronze, melon pigment, etc, or sheer, natural shadows (sheer gold, sheer champagne, sheer ivory, etc.)
Consistency: Very smooth and blends easily.

Perky (Limited Edition, Fafi Collection '08) - Warm pinky-peach with white pearl (satin)
Perky has good color pay-off and gives a soft wash of warm, vibrant pink to the lids. I personally don't look that good with it worn solo on my eyes, so I usually use it as a base under any pink toned eyeshadows. It's not one I reach for very often.
Consistency: Very smooth and blends easily.

Painterly - Nude Beige Cream (cream)
Painterly is a neutral, matte pink-beige. It has good color pay-off and works as a perfect base for neutral eyeshadow looks. It's a pretty versatile paint pot because it's such a natural shade, it blanks out your lid, making it a smooth, even canvas for your eyeshadow to stick to.
Consistency: Smooth, creamy and blends easily.

Bare Study - Soft Beige with gold pearl (frost)
Bare Study is another versatile paint pot that can work with a variety of looks. It's sheer and frosty, and although it doesn't add much to the lids when worn alone, it works as a great base for every color of eyeshadow with any finish. Because of it's light, frosty color, it makes eyeshadows used on top of it stand out a bit more. For a natural look, it looks great applied all over the lid with a soft brown in the crease, and a little bit of liner and mascara. It also works good for a brow highlight.
      Consistency: Smooth and blends easily.

Indianwood - Metallic antique brown (frost)
Indianwood is a pigmented deep, metallic gold. It's one of my favorite paint pots because it looks pretty on it's own, or combined with other warm eyeshadows. I use it as a base often with shades like MAC Woodwinked, MAC Bronze, Urban Decay Half Baked, etc to intensify the gold. It also looks great when applied over the lids with a light dusting of shimmery pigment on top!
Consistency: Exceptionally smooth, easy to work with, blends easily.

Groundwork - Mid-tone neutral taupe (satin)
Groundwork is a shade that is suitable for every skin tone for a light wash of ash brown to the lids. It has good color pay-off, and can be layered for full opacity. It's a great shade for medium brown smokey eyes and neutral eyeshadow looks. I often use it alone on my lids with a little eyeliner, mascara and a brow/tear-duct highlight when I'm in a rush or softly blend it across my top and bottom lash-line for a soft, natural effect. Consistency: Smooth and blends easily - drier than Indianwood.

Quite Natural - Dirty chocolate brown (cream)
Quite Natural is a warm, medium brown with very good pigmentation. I was a little disappointed at first upon purchasing it, because the consistency is a bit dryer/thicker in comparison to my other paint pots. It's still smooth to the touch, but I find that you have to work with it quickly because it dries in a short amount of time. I love wearing Quite Natural all over my lid, smoked out on the edges and blended in my lower lash-line. It's a very quick, effortless look that is very pretty! It can also be layered for a darker effect. I also use it as a liner (usually smudged, rather than applied precise) and I've even used it on my brows for a filler. Lastly, it works as a great base for dark brown eye looks.
Consistency: Drier than other paint pots, but still smooth to the touch. Blends easily, but dries quickly, so you must work quickly with it.

Constructivist - Metallic brown with red pearl (frost)
Constructivist is another favorite, as I'm a lover of brown, and this is a gorgeous brown! It's an extra-deep mahogany brown with slight shimmer. The uses for this paint pot are very similar (if not the same) uses as Quite Natural. I wear it in the very same way - all over my lid, smoked out on the edges and blended in my lower lash-line for a dark brown, simple smokey eye. The difference between the two is that Constructivist is a shade or two darker and on the eyes it's noticeably not as warm as Quite Natural. I also wear it layered under other brown eyeshadows when I want a dark eye.
Consistency: Exceptionally smooth, easy to work with.

      Favorites
Constructivist is definitely a favorite, as is Indianwood and Quite Natural (despite the texture). For the lighter shades, I'd pick Rubenesque as it's the easiest to work with and it's a great base for all of the warm colored eyeshadows I normally wear.

      Application
I usually use my finger to apply Paint pots because I can pick up a good amount of product with my fingers, and my body warmth will soften the product, making it easy to blend on the lids. It's also easy to blend out harsh edges with the fingertips. In terms of brushes, I find a flat synthetic brush works the best (often times I use a lip brush or small concealer brush) especially with the drier texture paint pots, such as Quite Natural. Fluffy brushes don't pick the product up well, but they can work good to blend out rough edges.

      Packaging
MAC Paint Pots are housed in clear, heavy glass jars with a black rubberized screw-top lid. It's the exact same packaging for their Studio Sculpt Concealer, and a bit smaller than their Fluidlines. They aren't the most ideal for travel because they are a bit heavy, and you have to be careful not to drop them on ceramic tile, concrete, etc, because the glass can chip. (It's never happened to me, but I've shattered many jars of Studio Fix Fluid over the years!)

Because these are cream products, you have to make sure to close the lid tightly each time after use, because they can become dry. If you have any issues with drying out, I've read that some like to pop the jar in the microwave for 10 seconds or so to soften it up again - I've tried it with Groundwork in the past, and it worked well.

I guess you can say that I'm a pretty big fan of MAC Paint Pots. I've used other products - MAC Shadesticks (discontinued), MAC Paint, NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils, etc - and although they might be more convenient to use, I prefer Paint Pots. I do like MAC Paint though for records, I have Bare Canvas and Bamboon and they work really well - just loathe the packaging!

If you haven't tried them yet, I definitely recommend trying one out at some point! I never thought I was going to like them. In fact, I thought they were an overrated product until I purchased my first one!

      The Round-Up

      Pros:
      • Although the color selection is small, the shades available are very pretty
      • Creamy consistency (the frost finishes tend to be smoother)
      • Easy to use
      • Work great as a base or alone
      • Long-lasting (the cream/satin finishes tend to last longer without fading)
      • Good Value - one jar will last a very, very long time with daily use. Especially the darker, pigmented colors.
      Cons:
      • Small color selection - all neutral or brown shades. Lacking a white shade (which is great for any eyeshadow - esp. colors and brights) and colors. It makes me wonder if they will discontinue the line all together.
      • Isn't very sanitary, considering if you use your finger each time and putting the product on your eyes. Taking a little product out with a brush or spatula would be your best bet, otherwise, make sure your hands are clean!
      • Heavy packaging - isn't ideal for travel
      Price: $17.50, MAC.
